BODIES OF WATER AND WIND. LIVING AND DEAD WATERS _28-31/01/2025
From a ditch to a gutter through the city.
This collective performance consisted of carrying water from the Segura River from an acequia (living water channel) to an azarbe (dead water channel) through the city of Murcia (Spain). The water was transported in reeds, which were then transformed into musical instruments.
The water route began at the Molino del Amor (Mould of Love), following the Acequia Mayor de Aljufía (Main Canal), which runs underground through the city. Following the channel of living water, we visited various important sites such as the Jardín de la Seda (Silk Garden), the City Museum, which displays various objects and stories linked to water culture, the Fabrica de Salitres (Saltpeter Factory), the hydraulic infrastructure of the San Esteban archaeological site, and the Nasrid pool at the Santa Clara Museum. We then reached the Partidor de Santa Ana (Santa Ana Splitter), where the river divides into the Benetúcer and Nelva irrigation ditches. There, the waters led us to the river, briefly accompanying it past the old hydraulic mills and the Museum of Science and Water. Now on the other side of the river, we crossed the Floridablanca garden to descend to the southern outskirts of the city, where the still waters of the Azarbe de Alarilla awaited us.
